From August 4, 2024, there has been widespread of a non consensual intimate video on various social media platforms showing a young girl being sexually assaulted, reportedly from Yombo Dovya, Temeke District, Dar es Salaam.
Urgent Notice
Whether knowingly or unknowingly, many in the community are contributing to the spread of abuse, humiliation, and increasing cruelty to the victim through;
a. Disseminating Content
Sharing this content with others who request or seek to view the abuse inflicted on the girl perpetuates the cruelty towards her. For those who possess this content, we urge you to delete it from your devices and community groups (such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, and others) to prevent further online gender-based harassment of the girl.
b. Accusing the Victim
We advise the community to refrain from accusing the victim with mocking and derogatory comments about what happened to her. This is to avoid inciting further abuse and psychological humiliation of the victim and her close associates.
c. Supporting the Abuse
For those using their social media platforms to express support for this act of abuse, we urge you to cease immediately, as such actions contribute to the increase of online harassment incidents.
Recommendation To Family, Relatives, and Friends
- Ensure that you stay close to the victim, provide comfort, avoid blaming her, and protect her.
- Ensure the victim stays away from her usual residence and environment, under close supervision from professionals or/and loved ones.
- Ensure that she stays away from social media during this period.
A Call to the Authorities
We urge the respective authorities to promptly apprehend the perpetrators and everyone involved, and to provide consistent updates to the public to know to know what is happening. Furthermore, we urge the health authorities to make intentional efforts to locate the victim and ensure she is placed in the care of mental health and psychological support professionals.
Conclusion
We call upon all citizens to condemn and cease spreading this content, as doing so perpetuates and incites the abuse inflicted on the girl. Furthermore, disseminating these videos is against the law as outlined in Section 14 of the Cyber Crimes Act, 2015. We emphasize the request of the majority for any citizen with information that could help in locating the perpetrators to come forward and report to the authorities.
